Daimler-Benz held a very strong position in the automotive market and sought new sales opportunities, particularly in the lucrative American market. The brand achieved a market breakthrough with even larger, more luxurious vehicles featuring air conditioning—in other words, with even more expensive models. The Mercedes-Benz 450 sold very well and remained popular throughout its 16-year production run without undergoing significant changes. A total of 62,298 units of the 450 SL model were manufactured.
