First entering service with the Royal Air Force in 1980, the Boeing Chinook HC.1 quickly proved itself to be one of the most capable and versatile heavy-lift helicopters in modern military aviation. With its twin-rotor design and enormous load-carrying capacity, the Chinook has become an indispensable asset to the British armed forces—deployed in roles ranging from troop transport and battlefield resupply to medical evacuation and disaster relief.

Over the years, the Chinook fleet has undergone extensive upgrades and expansions, with modern variants now among the most advanced aircraft in RAF service. Despite its age, the Chinook remains irreplaceable, with newer models simply building upon the helicopter’s already proven design. Under the Chinook Sustainment Programme, these helicopters are expected to continue service for at least the next two decades, a testament to their enduring value and effectiveness.

This 1/72 scale Airfix kit accurately represents the late-version Chinook HC.1, capturing the helicopter’s robust airframe and distinctive tandem rotor configuration. With fine detailing and RAF markings, it offers a rewarding project for modern military aviation modellers.

  • 1/72 scale plastic model kit
  • Includes Boeing Chinook HC.1 (Late configuration)
  • Detailed fuselage, rotors, and RAF decal options
  • Assembly instructions and painting guide included

Note: This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.

History:

The Boeing Chinook HC.1 was introduced into RAF service in response to the need for a powerful and flexible support helicopter capable of operating in diverse environments. Its twin-rotor design allows it to lift heavy payloads and operate in confined areas where conventional helicopters may struggle. Since its debut, the Chinook has seen extensive use in conflict zones such as the Falklands, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and remains central to the UK’s tactical airlift capability. Ongoing upgrades under the Chinook Sustainment Programme ensure it will remain in service well into the 2040s, securing its place as a backbone of British military aviation.

The paints listed here are those shown on the box for serious hobbyists who want to build the kit precisely. You do not have to buy them all and may prefer to choose alternatives.

For car bodies and motorcycle panels, we recommend using a main-colour spray can for the best finish rather than brush-painting the main body. One can is enough for one kit.

Tamiya kits use Tamiya-brand paints and paint codes. All other kit brands use Mr Hobby paints. You can find a huge range of paints, undercoats and lacquers in our Paint section.

Note: Mr Hobby “H” codes are water-based paints and are less smelly when used indoors. “C” codes are lacquer-based and can produce a finer finish. Add a small bottle of the correct thinner for your paint type to clean your brushes and make it easier to switch colours while building your kit.

We have tools for every budget, all available in our Tools section. For first-time builders and gift-givers, the products below are a practical way to get started. We especially recommend the Kit Building Bundle for beginners, as you only need this and your chosen paint colours to build a kit.

Although there is an initial outlay, these tools will last for many future builds and make model building more enjoyable. As with most things in life, having the right tools for the job produces better results. For higher-end tools, explore our Mr Hobby ranges.

If you build models regularly and value long-lasting tools and support products that help achieve the best possible finish, we have a wide range of quality items from Mr Hobby and Tamiya in our main menu. Here are some useful products to consider:
