History:
Following the achievements of the Apollo missions, NASA set out to develop a reusable spacecraft capable of ferrying astronauts and cargo into space. The result was the Space Shuttle, a groundbreaking system introduced in 1981. Its partially reusable design included a winged orbiter that returned to Earth like an aircraft.
